3.2.1 Tips on Recording your Videos

Below are some tips to get the most out of your recording.

  • Ensure that you set the video recording quality to 720p or 480p. This will reduce the overall file size of the video, which will make it easier to upload to Campus Online.
  • Place your recording device (phone, camcorder, camera) on a flat surface or tripod. Since some videos can be quite long, asking a colleague to stand and film may result in low sound quality.
  • Test your recording setup before the main recording to make sure that you are the only person visible and in shot, and that the audio is clear. For GDPR-compliance reasons, you must be the only person visible in any video you upload.

3.2.2 Video Optimisation

Video files can get quite large (for example, 15 minute CCET Test Administration videos recorded using an iPhone can be up to 2GB in size). This makes uploading a video to Campus Online more challenging on slower Internet connections, since large files can take several hours to upload and the connection to the website can time out, resulting in a failed upload. To reduce this problem, we recommend that you “optimise” the file size of your video recordings.

Ideally, this is done by lowering the recording quality on your recording device. This avoids the need to re-render your video using video editing software. If this is not possible, however, we have included some guides on how to use freely available software to do this, which are available in activity 3.2.3.

Reducing Recording Quality – iOS

  1. Tap the Settings app
  2. Tap the Camera option
  3. Tap Record Video
  4. Tap the 720p HD at 30fps option
  5. Close the Settings app

Reducing Recording Quality – Android

  1. Open the Camera app
  2. Swipe left to select Video from the recording options
  3. Tap the Settings icon (looks like three horizontal lines)
  4. Scroll down and tap Resolution
  5. Tap Video from rear camera and select the HD 720p option, or SD 480p option (if available)
  6. Tap the back arrow twice to close the Settings window

3.2.3 Merging Video Clips

Test Administration videos for the CCET courses are often recorded in parts, which will produce several files. Since these are submitted as a single video for your tutor to review, it will be necessary to combine the separate clips into a single file. Guides have been produced to help you do this.
